from EconTalkBecky Pettit of the University of Washington and author of Invisible Men talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about the growth of the prison population in the United States in recent decades. Pettit describes the magnitude of the increase particularly among demographic groups. She then discusses the implications of this increase for interpreting social statistics. Because the prison population isn't included in the main government surveys used by social scientists, data drawn from those surveys can be misleading as to what is actually happening among demographic groups, particularly the African-American population.

from Istook Live Whole Show SampleWho has the biggest appetite in America? It's only the beginning, according to President Obama. The bill to raise taxes on the rich still isn't enough, he says, and he's going to keep pressing to make the wealthy pay their "fair share". Of course, the top 10 percent already pay 70 percent of the personal income tax, but Obama will never be satisfied. If this was about food, we'd call Obama's insatiable appetite for higher taxes gluttony, one of the seven deadly sins. The more money pulled out of the private sector, the worse it hurts our economy. The Tax Foundation calculated that every dollar that government gets from taxing millionaires reduces the national economy by $20. Private sector spending rewards productivity and multiplies jobs. Government spending rewards political pull, dragging down productivity. Bigger government comes at the expense of jobs.
