Istook1140-Government Hatches A Fowl Plot
from Istook Live Whole Show Sample
From The Heritage Foundation, I'm Ernest Istook. Which came first, the chicken or the bureaucracy? Our government cannot track foreign visitors who overstay their visas. It loses track of military records. It sends Social Security checks to dead people. But now it wants farmers to track 9-billion chickens every year as they are hatched, raised, and ultimately sold for food. The proposed rule is aimed at tracking diseased animals as part of food safety. But those 9-billion chickens don't stand still. They are moved among hatching farms, breeding farms, egg farms and slaughter houses. Each bird would need multiple leg bands with their information; leg bands would need changing as the chickens grow. Just imagine how much extra you would pay each time you ate chicken, just to support the bureaucracy. Maybe the bureaucrats will back off for once. Let's hope this method of counting chickens doesn't hatch. From The Heritage Foundation, I'm Ernest Istook.

Ladies, We're Screwed: Why Obama's Re-election is Bad for Choice
Obama's re-election is great for moms, right? Aren't we just a bunch of mindless free spenders, so in love with humanity we want to support every cause and child as though they were each our own? Oh, hells no. From jobs to health care to education, let's face it ladies, we're screwed...and not in the much needed 50 Shades of Grey way. This election all boils down to choice. Because ours are now sadly limited. To make a simplistic sexist argument, how would you like it if you waltzed into the shoe department at Nordstrom's or Bloomingdale's and instead of ankle booties and wedges you found one or two styles of sensible, comfortable clogs? To borrow a term from Joe Biden, malarkey! With the employer mandate, small businesses are now compelled by law to provide health care for their full-time employees. What will this do? Will it bolster families and working moms by offering free medical care to those in need? Hardly! Many small business owners desperate to stay afloat will abandon full-time employees for their lesser trained part-time brethren to stave off government insurance mandates. Better to have three part-time knuckle draggers than two well qualified full-timers, and that means fewer hours and smaller paychecks for working families who would have otherwise had greater health care choices and would have been well able to attain private health care on a full-time salary. More families will be pushed to qualify for Medicaid, but according to the Washington Times, 60% of ...

Oklahoma Doctors vs. Obamacare
Three years ago, Dr. Keith Smith, co-founder and managing partner of the Surgery Center of Oklahoma, took an initiative that would only be considered radical in the health care industry: He posted online a list of prices for 112 common surgical procedures. The 51-year-old Smith, a self-described libertarian, and his business partner, Dr. Steve Lantier, founded the Surgery Center 15 years ago, after they became disillusioned with the way patients were treated at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City, where the two men worked as anesthesiologists. In 1997, Smith and Lantier bought the shell of a former surgical center with the aim of creating a for-profit facility that could deliver first-rate care at a fraction of what traditional hospitals charge. The major cause of exploding US heath care costs is the third-party payer system, a text-book concept in which A buys goods or services from B that are paid for by C. Because private insurance companies or the government generally pick up most of the tab for medical services, patients don't have the normal incentive to seek out value. The Surgery Center's consumer-driven model could become increasingly common as Americans look for alternatives to the traditional health care market—an unintended consequence of Obamacare. Patients may have no choice but to look outside the traditional health care industry in the face of higher costs and reduced access to doctors and hospitals. Is all the recent talk of secession mere sour grapes over the election or perhaps something deeper? Currently there are active petitions in support of secession for all 50 states, with Texas taking the lead in number of signatures. Texas has well over the number of signatures needed to generate a response from the administration, and while I wouldn’t hold my breath on Texas actually seceding, I believe these petitions raise a lot of worthwhile questions about the nature of our union.

Lance Armstrong Cheated to Win. Is that Wrong?
After months of bad press, the greatest competitive cyclist of all time has officially hit rock bottom: The Lance Armstrong Foundation has dropped the name of its eponymous creator and will now be known as the Livestrong Foundation. Rest easy, Lance, it can't get much -- or is that any? -- worse. He may be a sanctimonious jerk whose doping denials are less convincing than a Lindsay Lohan rehab stint, but should he be pilloried for doing what all top cyclists - and increasingly, all of us - are doing: pursuing better living through chemistry? Reason TV correspondent Kennedy defends performance-enhancing drugs from steroids to Viagra to that special memory pill we can't remember the name of... About 3.30 minutes. Scott Lincicome: US Is a "Huge Subsidizer"
www.cato.org www.cato.org twitter.com You've heard of Solyndra, Government Motors, and the tens of billions of dollars transferred annually from US taxpayers to America's wealthy agribusinesses—including the occasional farmer living in Manhattan. Worldwide, government subsidies to chosen industries and favored companies are out of control, bankrupting treasuries, breeding cronyism, misdirecting and deterring private investment, distorting market signals, and undermining support for capitalism and free trade. Always demanding more, domestic subsidy recipients cite foreign subsidies as grounds for yet more largesse, and the cycle continues. How will this global subsidies race end?

Great video dealing with the mess of Petraeus and other military officials:
Athens of the Prairie: How Columbus, Indiana Got Great Architecture
Columbus, Indiana is a city of around 40000 people located an hour south of Indianapolis. Columbus is exactly the kind of city you'd expect to find in the Midwest, except for one curious thing. The American Institute of Architects has ranked Columbus 6th in the nation for architectural innovation and design, right behind New York, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco and Washington, DC. The architectural richness of Columbus isn't the result of some visionary planning board. Nor are the zoning laws in Columbus different than those in most other Indiana cities. Columbus has fascinating architecture because in the 1950s industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller (of the Cummins Engine Company) decided that he wanted to live in a more visually interesting city. To this end, Miller offered to pay the architect's bill for any new public building in Columbus. Today, Columbus boasts more than 70 buildings designed by internationally celebrated architects like IM Pei, Eliel Saarinen, Eero Saarinen, Richard Meier and Harry Weese. One man's philanthropy sparked, as Bradley Brooks of the Indianapolis Museum of Art puts it, "an idea that is moving a community forward." Approximately 4 minutes. Produced by Paul Feine and Alex Manning. Go to reason.com downloadable versions and subscribe to ReasonTV's YouTube Channel to receive notification when new material goes live.
